Head Over To The Punk Guy
To check out my Gonz’ Golden Oldies post about Braid. Also people were bummed i didn’t include The New Nathan Detroits. So here it is.
Braid- The New Nathan Detroits
The Octagon- Nothing But Change

Label-Serious Business Records
Release Date- 08/28/07
Purchase- Serious Business Webstore
Rating- 8/10
RIYL- Meneguar, The Microphones
So i got this record in the mail today, and of course i was expecting the worst based on the fact that i generally hate new bands and ones that are looking for the “blog buzz”. But i was pleasantly surprised with this record.
The Octagon is a three piece indie band that hails from New York. This album is full of stripped down indie rock songs all clocking in for the most part under 3 mins. This is a good thing that most bands fail to realize this day in age. People think the longer the song the better it is, not the case. Every song on this record (17 in all!), is chuck full of catchy vocal melodies, driving guitar work with a nice lo-fi sound and all around great indie rock sensibility. I could see this band gaining great popularity with the current trend in the world of indie rock these days but these guys are a cut above the rest. I would like to check these guys out live they seem like a fun time.
Check out some tunes on the bands MySpace page.

In Rainbows Revisited
So the other day i cracked open Billboard to see what has been going on because I’m slowly getting back to life, and I check the Billboard top 200. To my amazement i saw In Rainbows was number 1. Even more amazing it was the second week of the physical release. To me this is quite amazing. The first week it sold about 8,000 copies, which is still good considering the whole “experiment”. the second week it sold around 111,000 i believe. That is incredible. this past week they were able to sell around another 58,000 copies. This puts them at about 180k after 3 weeks. In this current music climate selling that many is a feat in itself. If you asked me to put out a physical release of this album i would say no way, clearly I would have been wrong. The one thing that people don’t understand is that this could never work again. artists still need their labels for support and promotion and all that good stuff. But long story shot my hat is off to Thom Yorke and company for pulling it off big time. next time around give me a record that you haven’t done already.
Very Underrated Band
So i know i am a day late but hey better late than never right? So the band I give you is Christiansen. These guys from what I know have been broken up for a min now. I don’t know much about the band which is probably a bad thing since I’m writing about them but whatever. They had two releases on Revelation Records. The EP is by far my favorite. They have a style that is the perfect mix of At The Drive-In and the “Dischord sound” . I was able to see them once when they opened for GlassjAw and Boy Sets Fire, they were fucking awesome. Its shame when bands like this break up, they could have done some sick stuff. Anyhoo here are a few songs from their EP that I dig.
